A MAYWEATHER COLLOQUIUM
By Blackbull
INSIDE BOXING (May 26, 2004) - What’s with all the talk about Floyd Mayweather vying for the top spot in the infamous Pound for Pound list? The truth is Mayweather has had a stronghold to the number 1 spot for a while now. The clinic he put on against DeMarcus Corley this past Saturday only confirms Mayweather’s position at the top of the legendary list.
Mayweather pretty much had his way against Corley, landing a straight right had at will. Corley gave it his all in the 4th round when he caught Mayweather with a couple of solid power shots that would send Mayweather in retreat. The two banged it out for most of the 4th round going back and forth with clean effective punching. Outside of the 4th round Mayweather was in complete control.
In preparation for this fight, Mayweather utilized the talent and skills of national prospect Donald Camarena, Colorado and World contender Ebo Elder, Georgia.
After the fight Mayweather said Arturo Gatti is next on his list.
Prior to the Mayweather vs. Corley fight, My pound for pound list looked like this: 1. Floyd Mayweather jr. 2. James Toney 3. Rafael Marquez 4. Erik Morales 5. Manny Pacquiao 6. Oscar DeLaHoya 7. Roy Jones Jr. 8. Kostya Tszyu 9. Arturo Gatti 10. Shane Mosley. The current list can be viewed at InsideBoxing.com.
Camarena receives personal congratulations from the number 1 man in Colorado in a letter dated May 19, 2004 from Governor Bill Owens. “By winning the CAM Junior Welterweight belt, you have shown all of North America what a native Coloradan can accomplish.”
Mia St. John fought in Lonetree, Colorado on Sunday May 23rd at the Club Avalon where she quickly disposed of Melissa Yanas in the 3rd round. St. John pads her record to 33-4-2 while Yanas drops to 3-2. What puzzles me is how commissions allow St. John with 40 fights under her belt fight fighters with only a few professional bouts. I like to see where a commission would allow an experienced male fighter go against fighters with less than 5 fights. The St. John thing is getting old maybe that’s why there were so many empty seats in the house which was set up to seat less than four hundred.
World ranked J.C. Candelo dumps trainer Trevor Wittman, James “Buddy” McGirt will take over as head trainer. Candelo will be leaving for training camp in Florida this Friday, while in Denver long time friend and trainer Aurelio Martinez will provide the honors of coaching.
I think it’s safe to say Rocky Juarez and Juan Diaz have graduated from the “Prospect” label and into “Contender” status.
The Associated Press reports Juarez will be taking on undefeated Zahir Raheem in an IBF featherweight elimination bout on July 17th. On the same card Diaz will challenge for the WBA world lightweight championship against Lakva Sim.
