A SECOND CHANCE FOR TYSON?
By Blackbull
INSIDE BOXING (July 23, 2004) - Somehow, when I hear people say Mike Tyson
deserves a second chance, I can’t seem to agree. When I think about someone
getting a second chance, I think of a homeless person, a person who maybe lost
everything he or she owns in a fire or an accident of some kind, a person who’s
life went bad because of a drug or alcohol habit.
Certainly a person who made well over a hundred million dollars and who was
convicted of rape and who threatens to cause (or does) bodily harm to most
everyone he meets, would not be high on my list as a person I would feel sorry
for.
Why all the sudden do we feel sympathy for Tyson? You hear it all the time now,
“A new, friendly Tyson,” or, “Tyson turns a new leaf.” Suddenly, Tyson likes
kids and signs autographs. He no longer wants to eat them! I can’t understand
how the common folk can feel Tyson deserves a second chance, a second chance to
make millions of dollars.
Most people in the United States and around the world will never realize the
concept of having millions of dollars in the bank. Most live paycheck to
paycheck and will many times have to settle on buying extra boxes of cereal
because they can’t afford the steak when buying groceries for the week. Yet a
strong campaign is going on to convince people to forgive Tyson and give him a
second chance to make millions. The campaign will convince you to see the next
Tyson fight and pay for it!
Call me cold-blooded or whatever you will, but I don’t buy into the second
chance theory. I don’t feel sorry for Tyson and I have no intention of
contributing to his chance at becoming a millionaire… again.
Instead, I have decided to take the money I would ordinarily spend to watch and
cover this fight, and buy some steak and beef patties and have a family
barbecue. I advise you to do something similar. Take the wife or girlfriend to
dinner. Buy the kids a new toy. You’ll feel better about yourself. Oh, and don’t
be afraid to take it a step further. If the sponsor is Bud Light, switch to
Miller light or visa versa. For once in your life, make a difference!
