Alvarado Pounds Garnica - Perez settles for a Majority Draw

By Moncayo Blackbull

DENVER - IB (October 3, 2008) - Mike Alvarado (23-0) hasn't fought in front of a home town crowd in 4 years, tonight he did not disappoint as he pounded Manuel Garnica (24-10) for 4 rounds. Local fighter Manny Perez (12-4-1) took it to Oxnard's Brandon Rios (18-0-1) but had settle for a draw.

Alvarado did not wait nor worried about having a feeling out round as he aggressively gave Garnica a good old fashion whippin. Alvarado had Garnica swaying from post to post as he continually unleashed onslaught of punches. At 2:17 seconds of the forth round Garnica had enough going down and then spitting out the mouth piece. The contest was scheduled for 10 rounds of action.

The co-main event had highly touted and undefeated Brandon Rios from Oxnard, California struggle against local fighter, Manny Perez. First round was a feeling out round. Rios started the second strong even hurting Perez early but that's where any signs of dominance would end. After getting hurt in the second round Perez sucked it up like a true champion and finished the round strong giving Rios a taste of his own medicine.

Round three was completely Perez' round as he looked in top form blasting Rios with combinations and counter punches. Perez continues to be the better fighter in round 4 with more of the same. Round 5 Rios makes good on his punches making the round pretty even but taking the edge.

Rock em' sock em' boxing from here on out, I gave Manny the sixth and Rios the seventh. Eighth round was non stop toe-to-toe action with a lot of in tight fighting due to neither fighter taking a step backward. Perez wins the round landing the better and most punches. Ninth round Perez continues to press the action as Rios starts to struggle.

The last and final round both fighters start strong but Rios finishes and ends the round strong landing nice combinations to the head of Perez.

I witnessed a good competitive contest, giving Perez 5 rounds to Rios' 4 rounds with 1 even.

Official scores were 96-95 Perez and 95-95 twice
