DENVER, Colorado (Inside Boxing – July 2, 2005) - Denver boxing fans can look forward to a major boxing event this summer as Oscar De La Hoya has reserved the date of August 12th with the Colorado Boxing Commission.

The participants for the Golden Boy Promotions show have yet to be announced but the date will coincide with Denver’s Grand Prix weekend making this the most action packed weekend of the summer.

With boxing promoters in Colorado sprouting up quicker than pimples on a chocolate eating teenagers face, Colorado is having a “boxing fest” of a summer.

Colorado boxing events are scheduled for July 9th in Pueblo at the Convention Center, July 17th at the Denver Athletic Club, July 21st in Denver at the Palladium night club, July 23rd in Ignacio at the Sky Ute Casino, July 31st in Cripple Creek at the Gold Rush Casino Amphitheatre, August 9th in Denver at the Auraria College Campus, August 12th in Denver at the Pepsi Center and August 29th in Denver at the Palladium night club.

What’s baffling is why all of a sudden the big hit? Colorado is not known for its great crowds at boxing events with an average of 300-500 but we are talking club shows and what De La Hoya has planned will be far from a club show, I’m sure.

Denver’s lightweight Stevie Johnston sold out the Magness Arena March 17, 2000 and drew over eight thousand fans at the Pepsi Center when he fought Jose Luis Castillo on September 15, 2000. The former world champion Johnston has not fought since his loss to Juan Lazcano on September 13, 2003 but is rumored to be training with renowned trainer Buddy McGirt in Florida.

Rumor also has it WBC Super lightweight Continental Americas Champion Donald Camarena will be making a run at a world title. Colorado fans just might get an opportunity to see him in action.

De La Hoya fighters include Marco Antonio Barrera, Bernard Hopkins, Daniel Ponce-De Leon, Oscar Larios, Javier Jauregui, Juan Valenzuela and Demetrius Hopkins.

Whoever De La Hoya decides to put on the card, Denver fans can be assured of a world class show.
