MESI’S JUST MESSIN’

(Inside Boxing, July 22, 2003) - First we read reports of a Baby Boy Joe Mesi versus DaVarryl Williamson contest being a done deal, the two would fight each other on a Lou DiBella card featuring a slew of heavyweights.  Except it was just jumping the gun.  Mesi’s camp quickly cleared that rumor by saying they had no intentions of fighting Williamson.  Fighting Williamson would be a step in a parallel or even backward direction is what we heard from team Mesi, they were looking to move forward.  Team Mesi did at the time leave the door open by saying they would only consider fighting Williamson in Buffalo, New York, Mesi's home town.

Obviously, this statement was only made because it was unlikely Williamson would consider going into hostile territory.

Williamson, DiBella and HBO all gave in to Mesi’s request and moved the entire heavyweight show to Buffalo.

Reports again were published announcing the fight between Mesi and Williamson and again without any confirmation.

Press releases were sent out announcing a press conference would be held on July 17 to announce the fight.

Mesi’s camp would postpone the press conference for one week and re-schedule for July 22.  The reason for the postponement was simple; the fight had not been signed.  The word out of Mesi’s camp was they did not want to look stupid and would not announce the fight until a deal had been consummated between DiBella and Tony Holden who promotes Mesi.

Today is July 22nd the day of the scheduled announcement and we’ve yet to hear anything pertaining to the press conference.  This could only mean… well let’s just wait for an official announcement.

I did talk to Williamson and he himself had not heard anything.  As a matter a fact Williamson stood by the phone all day making himself available to be patched into the press conference.  The call never came nor an explanation.

Mesi needs to make a decision and stop this act of how great he is.  He can not defeat Williamson, he will not beat Williamson and he knows it.

In Williamson Mesi will find a boxer with skills, not a boxer who stands right in front of him and allow himself to be hit.  Plus, Williamson can dish out his own arsenal of mighty shots.

If you're Mesi, how do you back-out of this fight and say no to the boxing world when your entire requests have been met?  How do you say no to a six-figure purse?

You don't, you can’t.

Take your schooling like a man… and your money to the bank.

Meanwhile we will wait for an official announcement.
