BUNEMA, CAMARENA VICTORIOUS
By STEPHEN S. JOHNSON
DENVER, COLORADO (INSIDE BOXING November 18, 2004) - This Friday evening, the
LYON SPORTS GROUP, INC. provided Colorado fight fans an opportunity to see World
Class talent normally reserved for Las Vegas.
WBC Continental America’s Super Welterweight Champion Alex Bunema (25-4-2, 12
KO’s) took on a game Alberto Mercedes (12-8-1, 8KO’s) in one Co-Main Event,
while Donald Camarena (14-1-0, 8KO’s) battled Marteze Logan (15-10-2, 2 KO’s) in
the other.
Notable at ringside was DaVarryl Williamson, fresh off a victory against Oliver
McCall which should put him in line for a shot at one of the championship titles
in the heavyweight division.
Most in the crowd on hand were in attendance to see the “hometown boy” Donald
Camarena in what would be his first true test as a professional.
This 10 round exciting match went to the judges.
The scores of 95-94, 96-94 and 97-92, gave Camarena a unanimous decision over
Marteze Logan in what most ringside observers thought a much closer bout than
the scores indicated.
Alex Bunema and Alberto Mercedes ended the night with a grueling 12 round bout
that saw Bunema wear down a game but over-matched Mercedes.
There was a very impressive undercard that started off with an exhibition bout
featuring Greg Jensen and David Hernandez who entertained all in their 4 round
match.
The next match pitted John McKinney against Denver favorite “Ayo” Fadeyi
(10-5-1).
Fadeyi was able to win a split decision in a bout that was probably the most
entertaining of the evening.
In what was probably the bout where the “mile high air” most visibly took a toll
was the match of Brock Stodden (16-8-1) against James Brock (9-19-2). .
The scorecards had Stodden win a unanimous decision 79-73, 79-73 and 80-72 in an
8 rounder where Brock was forced to fight the last couple of rounds with his
hands down and “sucking air” as the pace and altitude took his aggressiveness
away.
Colorado Boxing Commissioner’s Ralph Dabney and Norm Sherbert were in attendance
as were leader Josef Mason along with Lee Peters.
On this Friday in Denver, Colorado the night was cool and crisp outside but the
action inside the National Western Stockshow Sports Complex was hot, heavy and
very entertaining.
