TWO OF THE THREE CAN PRODUCE
By Stephen Johnson
INSIDE BOXING (JANUARY 24, 2009) “Sugar” Shane Moseley will probably be on late night TV in the near future. The next hawker of George Foreman type grills and other age-defying products, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the new year by totally dominating an awkwardly slow and confused Antonio Margarito last night.
The fight was over after the first round in that it immediately exposed Margarito as a de la hoya clone, with Moseley firing machine gun like jabs and combinations that kept Margarito off balance and defenseless.
This was unbelievably the Shane Moseley of ten years ago! Taking the fight that his business partner, de la hoya, would not touch, Shane Moseley showed the boxing public that he still has the necessary skills to be a WORLD CHAMPION.
GOLDEN BOY PRODUCTIONS has Bernard Hopkins and Shane Moseley that continue to defy the odds of competing well into their later years. These two are saavy enough to pick the battles they feel that will bring financial comfort, while still being competitive. Oscar de la hoya cannot do what his business partners have done.
The one thing we saw last night was the apparent mistake of de la hoya by NOT taking on Antonio Margarito. That exhibition we saw last night made most feel that maybe de la hoya would do himself a service by fighting at a weight more realistic. Shane Moseley and Bernard Hopkins both continue to fight at the weight they know they can reach without hurting their speed or punching power.
If Oscar de la hoya can fight Antonio Margarito at the 147 lb. welterweight limit, he may be able to handle the slow starting and slow handed Margarito.
But one must remember that de la hoya is on record saying that he would not
“end my boxing career by fighting a Mexican fighter”.
“Sugar” Shane Moseley and Bernard Hopkins have truly shown themselves to be
WORLD CHAMPIONS and should be congratulated. But they have also missed on their
“mission” to develop and manage new talent in the sport.
It was fun and entertaining to see a 4 to 1 underdog take charge of a fight
that few gave Moseley a chance to survive, much less win.
Last night was special for Shane Moseley who can now either join George Foreman
and produce his own line of late night gadgets…or continue to fight “father
time”.
We all know that time waits for no one, but future hall-of-famers Shane Moseley and Bernard Hopkins, continue to impress and dominate their younger and sometimes bigger and stronger opponents with relative ease.
Last night was all about “Sugar” Shane Moseley and his drive to be the best.
CONGRATULATIONS…OLD MAN!!
