TACOMA, WA (IB – July 28, 2007) – From the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma and
televised on HBO’s Boxing After Dark (BAD), Vernon “The Viper” Forrest improved
his record to (39-2, 28 KOs) and became a the WBC Light Middleweight Champion by
winning a unanimous decision over Carlos Baldomir (43-11-6, 13KOs).
This fight could actually be summed up with one word – BRILLIANT! That is
exactly what Vernon Forrest was on this night as he dominated Baldomir in a very
entertaining and action-packed fight.
Vernon showed that he has totally heeled, and he possesses the total package as
a multi-talented boxer and a puncher all combined into one great fighter! The
judges scored the fight as 118-109, 118,109, & 116-111.
Forrest was landing good jabs, left hooks to the body and head, as well as good
stiff right hands to the head of Baldomir. As a result of the toughness of
Baldomir, complimented by his great chin, this fight managed to go the entire
distance. There were no knockdowns in the fight and there was one point
deduction in this contest. Vernon was penalized a point in the 9th round for a
low blow. This happened to be the best round of the fight for Baldomir. Forrest
was able to regroup though and control the fight down the stretch as well for
rounds 10-12. An overall BRILLIANT performance by Forrest and a great exhibition
of courage in defeat was shown by Baldomir.
Forrest, who is now a three-time world champion, was fighter of the year in
2002, and is now on top again with a very bright looking future ahead of him. He
will have plenty of options at the 154lb class against fighters such as Winky
Wright, Oscar De La Hoya, Mosley, Cotto, the list goes on and on, as well as
good fights at the middleweight 160lb class. I would love to see him fight the
winner of Jermain Taylor vs. Kelly Pavlik for the middleweight title. When asked
by Larry Merchant who he would like to fight next? Forrest replied, “Right now I
just want to go home and rest.”
Well, if that rest Vernon is talking about serves him like the one year lay off
prior to this Baldomir fight, I like his chances against anyone of the elite
fighters in the 154lb or 160lb class of fighters. Again, Forrest looked that
BRILLIANT…
Congratulations Vernon on wining another world title!
