INSIDE BOXING (8/28/02)- Oscar De La Hoya is just like a piece of 14K Gold. I'm sure most of you either own a piece of gold, or know of others that do. When it's new, it is really, really shiny. After it has been worn quite a few times, it becomes dull and loses some of its shine... However, all it takes is a little polishing and it will restore back to the brilliant luster it had when it was new.

This will describe Oscar De La Hoya come Saturday Night on September 14th when he takes on Fernando Vargas in their World Superwelterweight/Jr.Middleweight Championship bout live from the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas (Televised on PAY Per View) starting @ 9:00 PM EST.

Vargas is the perfect solution of polish/jewelry cleaner to motivate Oscar to shine like 14K Gold! For Oscar, its not about the money anymore, he has that, a singing career if he chooses, and some. Oscar says "It's all about placing myself in history, my mentality is different now than it was before. I'm not thinking about a world title or making the money."

For the upcoming bout being dubbed as BAD BLOOD, it's all about striving to secure his place in the history books. "These are my last fights," De La Hoya said. "I already know in my mind these are the defining fights of my career. I'm going to go out with a bang."

Its very easy to fall prey to the stereotype that Oscar's too GQ, he's too much of a pretty boy to still have the courage to mix it up. As this former Olympic Goal medallist, and World Champion in five different weight classes has shown us in the past, when he is shining, oh my he is shining brightly! I will always say, "In order to achieve greatness, one must attempt great things!" My hat is off to De La Hoya for taking on any and all comers. Oscar even speaks of what's coming next after he defeats Vargas. He is setting his sights on Mosley, Trinidad, and even Bernard Hopkins as the next container of polish/jewelry cleaner, to show how much the Golden boy can shine. "Those are the fights I'm looking at," These aforementioned fighters aren't your fly-by-night names either, we're talking definite Superstars in their own right respectively.

So mark September the 14th on your calendar to see a Mexican-American show down for the bragging rights of Southern LA, in California.
