WINKY BROUGHT THE WRIGHT STUFF – HE DOMINATED TRINIDAD
By Ron Brashear

(IB – May 13, 2005) – It just goes to show that when you seek out greatness,
take on greatness, while all along believing you possess greatness as well, you
can reign as a superstar! Ronald “Winky” Wright improved his record to (49-3, 25
KOs) and literally dominated Felix “Tito” Trinidad (42-2, 35 KOs) in practically
a 12-round shutout in their WBC Middleweight title eliminator bout! The judges
scored the bout 120-107, 119-108, 119-108 all for “Winky” Wright. Felix Trinidad
was penalized a point for low blows in the 9th round. Can you imagine that? I
don’t even believe the "Winky" Wright optimists believed it would turn out to be
this one-sided. From the sound of the opening bell, “Winky” Wright controlled
this fight with a stiff right jab. A jab with so much precision, it made the
“Great” Felix Trinidad look so amateurish, that it just silenced the pro
Trinidad capacity crowd! This fight turned out to be total mismatch.
Wright, the fighter that most champions have steered away from until Sugar Shane
Mosley decided to be brave in 2004, and cost him two consecutive losses, will
probably be avoided even more now. Ronald “Winky” Wright is a force to be
reckoned with and it would stretch Hopkins’ Jermain Taylor, or De La Hoya’s
skill sets to the limit for any of these three elite fighters to defeat to
Wright. I would love to see any of these three match-ups.
Where does Trinidad go from here? He could perhaps still have a future in this
sport, but he should avoid taking a re-match with “Winky” Wright. I think he
will come to discover pretty soon that he just happen to run into a budding
Superstar that can do that same thing to practically all of the fighters 154-160
lbs.
What a great story of Perseverance! It may have taken him almost 15 years to
arrive at this level, but hats off to Ronald “Winky” Wright! He has arrived now
and it couldn’t happen to a more humble and deserving guy! I hope he cashes in
on this victory and continues on to do great things in this wonderful sport of
boxing! The sport of boxing hasn’t witnessed an all-around southpaw fighter with
that much skill, since watching the great defensive king “Sweet Pea” Pernell
Whitaker in the late 80s and early 90s. I think “Winky” summed it up best after
the fight by saying, “I keep proving myself over and over again.”
In the co-main event, Zab “Super” Judah (34-2, 25 KOs) successfully defended his
undisputed Welterweight titles by knocking out Cosme Rivera (28-8-2, 20 KOs) at
2:11 of the 3rd round. Rivera was down twice in the 1st round and once in the
3rd round.
Under card:
William Grigsby (18-2, 7 KOs) captured the IBF Light Flyweight title by
defeating Jose Victor Burgos by unanimous decision.
