BEST FEMALE FIGHTER - LAILA ALI OR ANN WOLFE? – EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CASANDRA GEIGGAR

By Ron Brashear

ATLANTA, GA (IB – February 11, 2005) – If I had to quantify the percentages of votes amongst boxing fans, I would offer the following. I would guess that about 90% of boxing fans believe that Laila Ali (20-0, 17 KOs) is the best female boxer in the world. I would also guess that about 10% of the boxing fans believe that Ann Wolfe (18-1, 12 KOs) is the best female fighter in the world.

What better way to gain insight into this question than to go to someone that should know the answer. Casandra Geiggar (6-5. 6 KOs) happens to be the last woman on this planet, who has fought Ann Wolfe and Laila Ali back-to-back. Here is what Casandra had to say when I did this exclusive post fight interview with her:

RB: Casandra, after going through this tough with Laila Ali, what is going through your mind at this time?

CG: “I am frustrated because I know she was getting tired. I know I had my openings coming up. Her hands were starting to come down and I know she was tired. I knew I only had the one chance to win and that was to knock her out.”

RB: You are last person on this planet that has fought Laila Ali and Ann Wolfe back-to-back (other person is Valerie Mahfood). So tell us Casandra, which of the two ladies is the stronger puncher?

CG: “There is no doubt, it is Ann Wolfe. The body shots that I took from Ann Wolfe, I still felt later after the fight. Ann is the stronger fighter.”

RB: Who would you give the edge to in speed?

CG: “I would give the edge to Laila in speed. However, once Ann sticks a hand on her, that speed would be gone. She would be too busy trying to protect her body. It took her 8 rounds for the people to stop it, not me, the people to stop it. There is no way she can make it eight rounds with Ann.”

RB: You should feel proud Casandra because you are one tough lady. Where do you see yourself going from here?

CG: “Right now Ron, I’m very pissed off. I still want to continue. I want to talk it over with my family, my corner. I am 37 years old in life, but in the boxing game, I am still young.”

RB: Once you watch the tape of this fight, do you think you will reflect on what you could have possibly done differently?

CG: “I know what I could have done different. Her speed caught me off guard but I knew she was tired. They didn’t want that 10th round to come. Ann only had 6 rounds and she couldn’t stop me. I showed tonight that after 6 rounds, Laila couldn’t stop me either”

RB: Thanks Casandra for granting Insideboxing this exclusive interview.

CG: You’re very welcome. Thank you for putting your Uncle Carl Brashear (basis of the Movie Men of Honor) on the phone. His words of encouragement were very helpful and meant a lot to me. Do I get to keep my T-shirt? :)”

RB: Of course!
