THE WEIGH-IN FOR THE MAYORGA VS FORREST REMATCH Las Vegas, NV (IB – July 11, 2003) – The weigh-in this afternoon, which was open to the public, drew a very large crowd that was very enthusiastic and there was plenty of electricity in the Showroom at the Orleans Hotel and Casino. The challenger, Vernon “The Viper” Forrest (35-1, 26 KOs), of Atlanta, Georgia, was weighed first and he came in right at the 147 lb Welterweight limit. Forrest appears to be in great shape and ready to go! The champion, Ricardo Mayorga (25-3, 23 KOs), of Managua, Nicaragua, approached the scale eating a piece of chicken and weighed-in at 146lbs. One would assume that this was his way to showing confidence that he has easily made the weight of the 147lb limit. Despite all of the pre-fight comments and trash talking that Mayorga had engaged in leading up to this bout, the weigh-in went off without any disruptive violence and was well received by the delightful crowd on hand. More MAYORGA WILL GET LOST IN THE FORREST THIS TIME (IB – July 9, 2003) – On Saturday night July12th, live from the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and broadcasted on HBO as a Don King Production, we will all get to see whether or not Mayorga can repeat his triumph 3rd KO victory over Vernon Forrest in their Welterweight rematch for the WBA/WBC titles. Mayorga. (25-3, 23 KOs) is riding high coming off the biggest upset of this year in January when he knocked out Forrest. Utilizing a charge-ahead style of winging wide punches, he was able to connect with the perfect shot to the jaw to derail one of boxing’s hottest stars, in Vernon “The Viper” Forrest (35-1, 26 KOs). More WHO IS THE REAL FLUKE? SECOND GO WILL SHOW (Inside Boxing, July 9, 2003) -
Stakes are high for former WBC world champion Vernon Forrest when he steps
into the ring this Saturday against WBA, WBC world champion Ricardo Mayorga.
Forrest became the talk of the town when he defeated the "all-mighty" Shane Mosley for a second time on July 20, 2002. He rose from a virtually unknown to one of the greatest fighters in boxing. Awards and incentives like 'Fighter of the Year," and a lucrative fight contract with HBO were handed to Forrest. He went from rags to riches. Suddenly, every boxer's dream was realized by Forrest. More FORREST ARRIVES IN VEGAS Vernon is scheduled to arrive in Vegas Wednesday July 9 on Delta Airlines, Flight 395 from Atlanta, at 12:21 p.m. Forrest, a former WBC welterweight champion, challenges the boxer who dethroned him, Ricardo Mayorga, for Mayorga's WBC/WBA 147-pound titles in the main event of a world championship tripleheader Saturday, July 12, at The Orleans. The outstanding eight-bout "Battle Of Orleans" fight card is promoted by Don King Productions, in association with Main Events, Inc. [End] LAS VEGAS (June 26, 2003) - The best punch of the night in Philadelphia on March 29, 2003, did not occur in the ring. The most impressive punch took place following the Bernard Hopkins-Morrade Hakkar post-fight press conference when former International Boxing Federation (IBF) 140-pound champion Zab Judah smacked World Boxing Organization (WBO) Champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley in the face during a heated exchange of words. "It was a sucker punch,'' said Corley (28-1-1, 16 KOs), who will defend his title against Judah (28-1, 1 NC, 21 KOs) on Saturday, July 12, at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. "It did not hurt, but it surprised me and drew blood. He (Judah) was just acting like a little gangster. Continuar |
