LAS VEGAS, NV (IB - December 7, 2002) – It was “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr.
(29-0, 20 KOs) who was victorious once again over Jose Luis Castillo (46-6-1, 42
KOs) for the WBC World Lightweight Championship Saturday night at the Mandalay
Bay Event Center. Mayweather won by unanimous decision with scores of 115-113
from two judges, and 116-113 from the third judge.
Although it may not have been a major crowd-pleasing display of guts and glory,
it did clearly illustrate that Mayweather has masterful boxing skills. It was
the sweet science of boxing that was on stage in this fight by one of boxing’s
best P4P fighters in the sport today.
Mayweather showcased quick right-hand leads, a good left jab, and superb foot
speed to remain out of harms way in route to victory over Castillo. Jose was
unable to cut the ring off and trap Floyd. Additionally, Castillo was unable to
lure Floyd into a toe-to-toe brawl and was merely issued a boxing lesson by the
more talented Mayweather.
The scorecards from the judges are not a true reflection of the competitiveness
of this fight. This re-match was clearly a much more decisive Mayweather win
than their first encounter in May of 2002.
Floyd told everyone that it would be easier this time around, “My plan was to
box
more, no power shots, be smart."
That is the trademark of a True Champion. They just find a way to win.
