The Rough, Ugly and the Controversy
LAS VEGAS, NV (February 9, 2003) - In the big awaited fight for the night,
Sugar Shane Mosley (38-2-0-35 ko's) now has a no contest on his record. Raul
Marquez (34-2-0-23 ko's) also with a no contest on his record. MOSLEY DOES HIS JOB, MARQUEZ QUITS LAS VEGAS, NV (IB-February 8, 2003) - Fight fans expected a good fight. Some even thought Raul Marquez had a shot to upset Shane Mosley. And why not? Mosley was coming off two losses against Vernon Forrest and his confidence level was questionable. Also, Latino fighters were on a
roll with Ricardo Mayorga defeating Forrest last week and Antonio Margarito
defeating Andrew Lewis earlier in the night. Why? Because Marquez was not in the ring to fight, he was there to collect a paycheck. More RULED A NO DECISION – PERHAPS STILL A WIN FOR “SUGAR” SHANE LAS VEGAS, NV (IB – February 8. 2003) – As the crowd began to settle into watching an intriguing match up of “Sugar” Shane Mosley (38-2, 35 KOs) against Raul Marquez (34-2, 23 KOs) in a 12 round Jr. Middleweight fight live from the Mandalay Bay Casino, Las Vegas, NV (HBO), the outcome was decided by something other than a punch. You guessed it, an accidental head butt is what prompted referee Kenny Bayless (rightfully so) to call a halt to this bout at 2:41 of the 3rd round and the fight was therefore ruled a NO DECISION. The head butts were merely a result of a left-handed fighter and a right-handed fighter both attempting to come forward with an attack. This style of fight yielded two head butts in the 3rd round. The 1st one opened a cut on the right eye of Marquez about 30 seconds into the round, followed up by another one to the left eye which opened another cut that led to the stoppage. Had the fight continued through 4 rounds, it would have had to go to the scorecards. Based on my personal observation, I had Mosley winning the fight 20-18 coming into the third round and appeared to have been winning the third round as well. More THE RETURN OF “SUGAR” SHANE – A LOOK AT MOSLEY VS MARQUEZ
Well, this Saturday evening, live from The Mandalay Bay Casino, Las Vegas, NV (HBO), “Sugar” Shane Mosley (38-2, 35 KOs) will step up to the jr.-middleweight division to challenge former jr.-middleweight champion Raul Marquez (34-2, 23 KOs). On the surface, this would appear to merely be an exhibition of “Sugar” Shane regaining some much needed confidence by showcasing his speed and talent to overpower Marquez. One would have to consider this as practically a shoo-in for Mosley to be victorious and assume that he just took a very calculated risk to regain his path to stardom by selecting Marquez as his opponent. More Interview with Raul Marquez in his return match against Sugar Shane Mosley (IB-February 4, 2003) -
Raul Marquez will be in action this weekend and has his hands full against Shane
Mosley. I had a chance to talk to him when he was being of assistance to
the Marquez versus Medina weigh in. Raul Marquez is a commentator for
HBO's boxing events. SHANE MOSLEY CAMPAIGNS AS A JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT (IB-February 3, 2003) - “Sugar” Shane Mosley will step into the ring as a junior middleweight on Feb. 8, up some seven or eight pounds from the welterweight division he once ruled. “I still feel I’m a great fighter.” Mosley said. “I’m going to the 154-pound division and see what develops there.” What’s sure to develop there is a rematch against Oscar De La Hoya. A rematch has tentatively been set for September once the money matters have been resolved. However, before Mosley starts to get too “sticky” over purse money to fight De La Hoya, he needs to focus on Raul Marquez whom he’ll meet this weekend. More |
