Kentucky Governor Replaces State Boxing Commission
Dr. George Ginter named to new board

January 8, 2005 - Newly elected Kentucky governor, Ernie Fletcher has dissolved what was the Kentucky State Boxing Commission. He has replaced it with what he calls the Kentucky Sports Authority which will be chaired by his new Lt. Governor, and staffed by many prominent people.

Appointed to the new authority is Dr. George Ginter, a practicing anesthesiologist. More importantly, Dr. Ginter may be perhaps the most qualified person in the world to serve on a boxing commission or board. Most appointments are made as political favors, loading up commissions with idiots, dreamers, promoter wannabe’s, matchmaker wannabe’s, and generally people who have no business being in those positions. Sometimes a governor gets it right and luckily lands a truly qualified person.

As a younger man, Ginter had nearly 60 amateur fights. He had 6 professional fights, while attending medical school. He promoted amateur boxing (investing and losing his own money). He promoted professional boxing (investing and losing his own money). He made matches for other promoter's. He traveled the country (mostly driving) with young amateur and professional boxers (using his own money), getting work where and however they could. He currently (for more than 10 years) is a volunteer boxing coach at the University of Kentucky, taking his charges all over the US, competing against teams such as Westpoint, the Naval and Airforce Academies, Xavier U, and many other fine colleges..

Dr. Ginter has spoken at numerous boxing conventions and gatherings, and has been an outspoken critic of “over regulation” by over zealous boxing commissions. When speaking, he often brought in various specialists to debunk and expose unneeded and unnecessary regulations put in effect by “political hack” commission appointee’s. In many states, professional boxing has been over regulated to a near stand still, and in states such as Nevada, New Jersey and a few others, it is now impossible to promote a boxing event without sponsors or television or casino gambling money.

Given governor Fletcher’s selection of Dr. Ginter, one might reasonably expect boxing in Kentucky to flourish and be just as safe, or safer than any other place in the world.
