“Baby Doll” rocks the RBC Center, Carlton Holland wins WBL 168lb title
By “KO” Ken Caro
Raleigh, NC (IB-January 19, 2003) - Bridget “Baby Doll” Riley rocked the RBC
Center in Raleigh N.C. with a six round decision over Angie “Scrapper” Bordelon
of New Orleans. The Judges scored the fight 60-52, 59-53, 59-53, but the crowd
was the real winner seeing the two lightweights stand toe to toe for 18 minutes.
Riley scored two knockdowns in the second round but Bordelon was determined not
to lose by a KO. The first knockdown was a cumulative effect of combo’s that
Bordelon was unable to avoid, the second was by a straight right and a left hook
that seemed to end the fight but at the six count Bordelon shot up like she was
hit a cattle prod! Riley came right back at her throwing a myriad of leather
that had no further effect on Bordelon. After the fight Riley had nothing but
praise for Bordelon who said that her best asset was her heart, but in future
training sessions she would work on more angles. Riley moves her record to 14-3
and said that she would love to make the trek from California to N.C. again if
given the opportunity. The crowd was so impressed they gave them a standing
ovation after the bout
Carlton Holland (15-7) added to his collection of championship belts defeating
Karl Willis for the WBL super middleweight title. Willis came out quick winning
the first round and then won the ire of ref Bill Clancy in the second round by
hitting on the break after repeated warnings. Willis mocked Holland in the
second round by dropping his hands and taking five shots that had little effect
on him, or so it seamed. The fight was stopped at 1:55 of the third after Willis
went down for the third time from a left hook to the throat. Holland who also
holds the CBL super middleweight belt was happy to be fighting in front of his
home crowd, he hails from Durham.
Buffalo N.Y. middleweight “Lightning” Les Ralston moved his record to 10-0 after
making short work of Gary Grant (10-12) who is originally from Kingston Jamaica
and now resides in Washington D.C. Grant was stopped at 1:43 of the third,
Ralston who gives no breathing room to his opponents looked as sharp as ever.
His sparring partner and stable mate “Hammerin” Hank Humphries was as equally
sharp moving his record to 5-0 5ko’s with a win over Harold Cook of Wilson N.C.
Cook was knocked out at 1:16 of the second round.
Other bouts featured Cruiserweight John Battle of Charlotte winning by TKO over
Mark Buchanon. The stoppage came at 1:23 of the fifth; Buchanon was coming off a
4-year layoff. Local heavyweight Paul “The Italian Hitman” Marainaccio (7-1-2)
defeated Dr. Ramanzi Kikalishvi 40-35, 40-35, 40-36.
Mitchell Promotions moves to Charlotte this Thursday with a black tie affair to
raise money for a local Children’s Fund and then on to Charleston S.C. on Jan
30th. Hope to see you there…
