May 7, 2006 - Is the hunger there? Can he mentally get fired
up to fight? Does he really want fight anymore? These questions were answered
last
night
by Oscar DeLaHoya when he impressively took Mayorga’s WBC Super Welterweight
title.
The fight it self was a total mismatch as DeLaHoya showed the world how
knowledge, skill and talent will prevail over barbaric and raw power.
Mayorga came out looking to land his wild power shots on DeLaHoya but the poised
and focused DeLaHoya was too smart to allow any “Home Run” shots to make contact. DeLaHoya would capitalize on the wide swinging Mayorga and lands a nice left
hook that put Mayorga down in the first round; there was not much hope
thereafter.
For the Nicaraguan slugger, outside a punchers chance, this fight was over.
DeLaHoya continued with his boxing clinic, scoring two more knockdowns and
stopping Mayorga in the sixth round. Mayorga did however manage to land a solid
uppercut that snapped the head back of DeLaHoya in the third round.
DeLaHoya has paved the way for him to leave the sport as one of the greatest
fighters of all time. There is but one fight left for DeLaHoya which leaves one
big question.
The fight being against Floyd Mayweather Jr., also one of the greatest fighters
of today and wanting to be recognized as the greatest fighter of all time.
The Question being can each side of the equation, keep this contest strictly
business? With Floyd Mayweather Sr. being the head trainer for DeLaHoya, the
personal issues may become more of a challenge to manage than the fight itself.
One thing for certain, should this contest take place, victory would certainly
put an exclamation mark on the accolade “Greatest” to the resume of the winner.
