Argentinian Hugo Garay and Ukrainian Yuri Barashian clash for the vacant WBA
lightheavy title July 3 at the classic Luna Park in Buenos Aires July 3, writes
notifight.com in a fight between two worthy contenders: Garay gave current WBO
titleholder Zsolt Erdei two very close fights and could well have been declared
the winner in at least one of them. Barashian beat Thomas Ulrich in his last
outing to win the EBU belt.
WBA heavy champ Ruslan Chagaevīs defence against Nikolai Valuev scheduled for
May 31 in Oberhausen is postponed. Chagaev have been suffering from a virus
infection and have been unable to train. A new date for Chagaev-Valuev II will
be announced soon. Universum will still go through with a show May 31 at a new
site. WBA bantam champ Wladimir Sidorenkoīs mandatory defence against Jose
Anselmo was already announced for this date and is likely to be a featured bout.
Italian jr middle Tobia Loriga, quickly back after the loss to J C Chavez, Jr,
defends the national jr middle title against Salvatore Annunziata June 13 in
Crotone.
Former EBU bantam champ Luis Romero have passed away at the age of 86 in
Barcelona, writes Espabox.com. Romero was a pro from the early 40īs through 1958
and won the European title in 1949. He was a southpaw with a dynamite left hand
but was very short for his weight division. Romero also challenged for the world
title but lost to South African Vic Toweel. Luis also split two fights with
fellow Spanish alltime great Fred Galiana.
SES demands a rematch inside 120 days between WBO ruler Sergei Dzinziruk and
challenger Lukas Konecny and today at a press conference in Magdeburg SESī boss
Ulf Steinforth gave Konecny a symbolic world title belt. Dzinziruk got a close,
majority decision over the Czech April 26 in Dresden.
German tabloid Bild Zeitung writes today that Universum have booked the Porsche
Arena in Stuttgart for September 27 - it could well be the venue for the WBC
eliminator between heavies Vladimir Virchis and Juan Carlos Gomez.
