European Champ Martinez Arrives In England For Munroe Fight
March 5, 2008 - With all the excitement generated by the two title fights
happening at the 02 Arena in London on Saturday, Rendall Munroe's challenge for
the European super bantamweight championship taking place this Friday at Harvey
Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham has come to the fore with the arrival in
England of hard hitting Spanish Bull and reigning European champion, Kiko
Martinez, who landed at East Midlands airport yesterday.
"I am here to put 'The Dustman' into the dustbin, and bring my title back home
with me," said Martinez. "I've already destroyed Bernard Dunne, who was supposed
to be a real superstar. Munroe is just a voluntary defense for me and I see no
danger; the title is staying with me."
The fight card also sees the continuing rehabilitation of former Nottingham
superstar Jason Booth, who will be looking to keep his Commonwealth bantamweight
title against dangerous challenger Lante Addy of Ghana, who arrived in England
on Monday afternoon.
'I'm not here for a payday, I want the title and I want to build a reputation,
the same as South Africa's Tshifhiwa Munyai did, by destroying the best
bantamweights in Britain," said Addy. "Then, we can have an all-African clash
between me and Munyai."
The surprise of the night could be light heavyweight Tyrone Wright, stepping up
to face the unpredictable Brian Magee, who in his last challenge for a title was
given a draw against the never say die British champion, Tony Oakey. Against the
ambitious Wright, Magee knows that anything less than a convincing win could see
his career coming to an end.
A fight certainly to capture the public's imagination features the slick,
arrogant skills of light welterweight Scott Hayward, who goes up against the
hard punching Gary Reid. This is an exciting match as neither man can afford to
lose if they are to stay within title contention.
